On Monday 27 April, 25 UDSF sommeliers met on a Bateau Parisien to taste 230 wines made from Cabernet grapes.

Spotlight on a fast-growing competition:
After an initial tasting that resulted in 38 Gold and 31 Silver medal winners, a second tasting by an expert jury elected the World’s Best Cabernet.

Union de la Sommellerie Française (UDSF): a flagship partner to guarantee an outstanding tasting
Cabernets are so diverse that their tasting requires a high level of expertise and specialised knowledge. This is why the tasting was performed by a jury made up exclusively of sommeliers who are members of the UDSF.
This year the Cabernets Competition had the honour of being presided over by a highly renowned sommelier, Jean-Luc Jamrozik, President of the Sommeliers de Paris.

The Bateaux Parisiens, an exceptional site at the foot of the Eiffel Tower
Anchored in La Bourdonnais port at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the fleet of boats known collectively as the ‘Bateaux Parisiens’ are a prestigious setting for a tasting.
Tasters note wines as they travel down the Seine surrounded by Paris’ greatest treasures: the Grand Palais, Louvre museum, Notre Dame Cathedral… In all, 12 mythical sites dotting the river banks can be viewed from the boats.

And the World’s Best Cabernet is...
An Australian wine! 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Estate Reserve cuvée 2013, designation of origin ‘Margaret River de Fermoy Estate’ was retasted by the expert jury. It was not an easy choice. Tasters were torn between the Australian wine and a Swiss wine with a Valais PDO, 100% Cabernet Franc from Gregor Kuonen, Caveau De Salquenen.
The two wines were both superb, each in its own category, and while the Swiss wine’s suppleness and balance gave the tasters pause, in the end it was the Fermoy wine that earned the ‘World’s Best Cabernet’ title.
